Fibromyalgia & Cryotherapy

Fibromyalgia & Cryotherapy

Hello Cryo Friends and Fam!

People are using Cryotherapy for all sorts of reasons nowadays. Isn’t that exciting?! We believe that it can help you. Every person who walks through our doors is different, and we hope to help you understand a bit more about why and how cryotherapy can help you improve your life.

Today, I wanted to share with you what Steve had to say about how cryotherapy helped with his Fibromyalgia, and a little bit about what is happening to your body to achieve this.

“I STARTED BATTLING FIBROMYALGIA WITH CHRONIC FATIGUE OVER THREE YEARS AGO.  ON A DAILY BASIS I EXPERIENCE SEVERE MUSCLE SPASMS/CRAMPING ALONG WITH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL FATIGUE.  THESE SYMPTOMS HAVE DRASTICALLY IMPACTED MY ONCE ACTIVE LIFESTYLE.  CURRENTLY THERE ISN’T A STANDARD TREATMENT AND/OR CURE FOR MY CONDITION. WHILE WESTERN MEDICINE DOES PROVIDE A FEW DRUG OPTIONS FOR SYMPTOM RELIEF, THE SIDE-EFFECTS SEEM TO OUT-WEIGH THE BENEFITS.  AFTER RESEARCHING CRYOTHERAPY AND LEARNING ABOUT HOW IT IS USED IN TREATING MEDICAL CONDITIONS IN ADDITION TO SPORTS INJURIES/RECOVERY, I DECIDED TO TRY IT.  WITHIN A FEW SESSIONS, I NOTICED A REDUCTION IN MUSCLES SPASMS/CRAMPING.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND VISITING JACK AND THE REST OF THE CREW AT HALO CRYOTHERAPY.”    – STEVE

So, how does this happen from cryotherapy? What is it about using cold shock to get the benefit of reduced symptoms of fibromyalgia and less fatigue?

Fibromyalgia sufferers have turned to Cryotherapy to help with chronic pain, fatigue, and muscle spasms and weakness. Exposing the skin to temperatures down to -250 degrees forces the body to react. The skin holds emergency receptors which respond to extreme cold by vasoconstriction of the blood vessels in the skin immediately sending blood to the core to protect vital organs and at the same time telling the body to release endorphins. These hormones are released and act as our bodies natural painkillers, and also induce a pleasant feeling similar to the feeling you get from vigorous exercise or an adrenaline rush.

As endorphins are released and blood goes to the core, the session ends and you step out of the cryosauna. All of the blood that was sent is now oxygenated and nutrient rich, and your body immediately goes into “fix it mode” as I like to call it, where vasodilation of the blood vessels throughout the body expand to 3 times their normal size sending a huge rush of positive blood flow outward throughout the body.

The muscles receive great amounts of oxygenated blood as well as the nutrients needed to recover and relax. This is a huge reason that Fibro clients experience less spasms and muscle weakness. The cold shock helps supply the muscles with great blood flow, and flush out toxins causing stiffness and discomfort.

The endorphin release and extreme cold temperatures also has an invigorating effect, great for physical and mental fatigue.
